A Break From Our Usual Programming…

I’ll be back next week with a normal blog post, but for the moment, a brief announcement: Macky and I got married this weekend!

If you’re thinking, oh I thought they were already married, well DING DING DING you are correct. We were legally married last year at the Taos courthouse. But the plan was always to have a wedding this year, when all the family could get into one place. I will admit that Macky and I dragged our feet a bit with this plan. Planning a wedding, it turns out, can be a bit of a headache, and we were pretty happy with our first wedding. Besides, wedding things are expensive and I had a lot of hang-ups with traditional wedding traditions (like, the whole, woman getting passed off like chattel thing). At the end of the day, however, I think we did it right. We did it our way, and we spent money on the things that mattered to us (food and people), and we threw one hell of a party.

We didn’t worry too much about the aesthetics. We (and by we I mean my dear artistic BFF Sam) made flower arrangements out of sage and other found items, and hung up some ristras and fairy lights and called it a day, but somehow — courtesy I suppose of the totally unseasonable weather and the backdrop of Kitchen Mesa and Pedernal — it ended up being gorgeous. And perfect. And really really fun. In other words, I’m really glad we did it, and really glad we did it our way.

It was amazing (and a little overwhelming) to be surrounded by our community and feel SO MUCH LOVE in one day. I gained four new siblings, saw dear friends I haven’t seen in seven years, and did so much hugging and laughing and dancing. It made me so determined to work harder to maintain these relationships regardless of time, distance and convenience. Macky and I both have so many amazing people in our lives, and we are so, so, so lucky. I could say more, but I think I’ll leave it at that. We are so lucky to have so much love in our lives.
